7 Easy Bible Verses to Kick Start Your Scripture Memorization

Recently, in a previous post, I explored ways to memorize Scripture. As a result, Terri and I are trying to make a conscious effort to memorize Scripture. It’s a fun way to get into God’s Word together and challenge each other as believers and as husband and wife. It is part of our continued desire to keep growing in our relationship with God. In Scripture, we are taught to love God with all our heart, all our mind, all our soul and all our strength. To love someone deeply and completely, as God calls us to do, means demonstrating through action that what matters to them matters to us. Scripture, God-breathed and inspired, is important to God. We know that because during his time on Earth as the perfect God-Man, Jesus embedded Scripture in his heart and depended on it to get him through the peaks and valleys of his time on Earth. For example, when Jesus was confronted by the Devil in the desert, Jesus responded with Scripture.

So what are some verses that we should start with? Great question.

Naturally, two verses from my previous post, come to mind.

Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

What are some other verses that we as Christians should have embedded in our hearts?

Here are 7 verses that I believe are good verses to begin our memorizing efforts with:

Leviticus 19:2b

You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.

Psalm 119:11

I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

Isaiah 53:6

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness…

Romans 5:8

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

If you have decided to make a concerted effort to commit God’s words to your heart, I pray that He will give you the strength to achieve your goal. While it may seem like a huge task, we can, and should, pursue it. It is for own benefit and demonstrates our love for the Lord. For God loved us before we loved him.

Peace go with you…
